Le Sang de la Pierre 2017, Aivalis Winery

Date Tasted: 12/2022

Sotiris and Christos Aivalis are famous among wine lovers who appreciate seriously made red wines. If not the best, indeed, one of the top three producers in the Nemea region. Both have made a purpose of their life to set Agiorgitiko in the pantheon of the most outstanding red varieties and showcase the potential of the Nemea region. Wines like Le Sang de la Pierre have nothing to be jealous of and can be compared with every other great wine in the world. In the discussion about whether Agiorgitiko is best expressed with the help of the barrel or not, a tasting of the wines of Aivali will give you your answer.

Appearance: Deep ruby colour.

Nose: It is ethereal and multidimensional with a striking character of floral and spice aromas. It has aromatic depth and complexity beyond the ordinary with intense red cherry, blackcurrant, liquorice, allspice, and cardamom.

Palate: The classy tannins will make some Pinot Noirs jealous. It is perfectly balanced. It is medium-bodied with medium-plus acidity and dense, complex flavours such as mushrooms, forest, wet leaves, game and tobacco. Although the alcohol is high it is undetectable. The aftertaste is long, delicious and unforgettable. It has volume but no weight, the epitome of elegance.

Drink: It can age a few years more but for god sake, drink it.

Food Pairing: Beef Bourguignon.
